ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Ilya Jacobs is a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Production Design with a concentration in lighting design and a minor in themed entertainment design.
With 5+ years of working in various roles in live entertainment, themed experiences, and hospitality Ilya Jacobs is passionate about being part of a team where he can collaborate effectively, harness his curiosity for acquiring new skills, and share his enthusiasm for education. He prides himself on infusing captivating lighting designs into memorable themed experiences. His designs are driven by a deep-seated love for crafting immersive environments that leave lasting impressions.

THE DESIGN PROCESS
Ilya Jacobs prides himself in being hands on from start to finish during a production. He recognizes the impact of a positive attitude, the importance direct communication with every department, and that coffee and donuts make an 8am work call more cheerful for everyone.

Ilya's design process starts with script analysis, then design concept presentations for directors and designers. Throughout the process he ensures lighting looks match directors vision and work alongside scenic and costuming elements. Cue sheets are developed with ease of calling for stage management in mind. As obstacles pop up or deadlines creep up, Ilya prides himself on seeing these challenges as puzzles to solve quickly and efficiently.
THE JOYS
OF LIGHTING
"Something to remember as a lighting designer is that the audience might not always recognize your work. Especially in stage plays grounded in reality. They might not notice the subtle shifts, but they feel it. They feel things get stark and cold as the actors argue. They feel the warmth and light as a once distant couple rekindles their love once again. When I'm designing, of course I want to do fun flashy things. Some of the tools I get to use are super cool! But what I really love about lighting design is the way it breathes life into a show. I love how much of an unsung hero it is to tell a story.

Design isn't always about having the prettiest thing on stage. To me, it's about being part of the storytellers who gift the audience an experience unlike any they've had before. To transport them, for even just a moment, out of their lives and into the scene in front of them. Then, after the long tech days are done and the show opens, design is about sitting down with everyone who worked so hard to make the show happen, getting a chicken sandwich, celebrating the little details the audience may never see, and asking each other 'what's next?'"
